Back to School Tips Every Parent Should Know

It’s hard to believe that we will be going back to school in just a few weeks. Summer was full of sunshine, adventures, family time, and making memories. But there’s something special about the excitement that comes with the start of a new school year. New friendships, new discoveries, and new opportunities to learn are just around the corner.

A little preparation now can help kids head into the classroom feeling confident, excited, and ready to learn. Whether your child is returning to Weaver Child Development Center (CDC) or joining us for the first time, preparing ahead can make the first days of school even more enjoyable.

How to Prepare Kids for School

When parents think about getting ready for school, it usually involves buying school supplies or new clothes. While those are certainly part of the fun, school readiness is about much more. Helping children develop routines, confidence, independence, and an excitement for learning is the focus.

As the new school year approaches, discuss all the wonderful things your child can look forward to. Ask what they’re excited to learn, remind them about favorite classroom activities, or talk about seeing their friends again. These upbeat talks help build anticipation and make the first days of school feel like an adventure instead of a big change.

Weaver CDC believes children learn best when they are curious, engaged and exploring. Building excitement before school helps create a strong foundation for a successful year.

Back to School Tips for a Great First Day

Every family prepares for the school year differently, but a few simple habits can make a difference. These back to school tips help children feel confident, build school readiness, and make getting ready for school an exciting part of the day. Introduce routines before classes begin and focus on the fun that comes with learning. Here are some ways to get your child ready to go back to school.

Practice a Morning Routine

One of the easiest back to school tips is practicing a morning routine before school starts. About one to two weeks before the first day, begin moving bedtime a little earlier and wake up closer to the regular school schedule. A good night’s sleep helps kids wake up refreshed, focused, and ready for a day of learning.

Make the routine fun! Practice getting dressed, brushing teeth, packing a backpack, and eating breakfast together. The more familiar these routines become, the easier getting ready for school will feel once classes begin.

Create a Schedule

Summer days have a different rhythm than the school year. Gradually bringing back a daily routine can make the transition back to school much smoother. Regular mealtimes, outdoor play, reading together, and consistent bedtimes all help strengthen school readiness.

Make a School Countdown

Create a fun countdown calendar for the first day of school. Cross off the days on a calendar or make a countdown on a whiteboard. This can give children something to anticipate while showing them how to prepare kids for school one day at a time.

Set Up a Creativity Space

Having a special place for learning at home also helps make the transition back to school easier. It doesn’t have to be a separate room, a small table stocked with crayons, pencils, books, paper, or other art supplies is plenty.

At Weaver CDC, our Reggio-inspired classrooms encourage creativity and hands-on learning. Bringing that same spirit home gives children a familiar place to draw, build, read, create, or complete work throughout the new school year.

Go Back to School Shopping Together

Shopping for school supplies is a fun tradition to start before school begins. Letting kids pick out their own backpack, lunchbox, water bottle, or outfit for the first day. Giving children age-appropriate choices helps them feel involved.

When unpacking the school supplies at home, encourage kids to practice for school. Have them open lunch containers, put folders into their backpack or organize their school materials. These simple activities build independence before the first days of school arrive.

Create a Happy Goodbye Routine

Even children who are ready for school sometimes feel nervous saying goodbye. Creating a simple goodbye routine gives them something familiar to count on each morning.

Whether it’s a special hug, a high five, a silly handshake, or a phrase like “Have the best day!”, keeping goodbyes short and positive helps begin each day with confidence. Before long, that routine becomes part of the excitement of going to school.

Get Excited About Learning

Perhaps the best of all back to school tips is simply sharing your own excitement. Children naturally pick up on the emotions of adults around them. Which means that talking positively about school makes a big difference.

Read books about starting school, drive by the building, or ask what they’re most looking forward to. At Weaver CDC, children spend their days asking questions, exploring new ideas, creating art, learning through play, and building meaningful relationships. Reminding kids about all the exciting experiences waiting for them helps build enthusiasm for the first days of school!
